Weight-loss Surgery Options
There are several types of weight-loss procedures available at Corona Regional Medical Center.
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
Surgeons place a staple line across the top portion of your stomach to create a very small stomach pouch. They connect a new stomach pouch to the small intestine. This reduces the amount of food eaten and decreases absorption of food that’s consumed.
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy
About 60-80 percent of the stomach is permanently removed. The remaining part of the stomach connects to the esophagus and small intestine, forming a sleeve. This can be an alternative for people who are at higher risk for gastric bypass surgery.
Adjustable Gastric Band Removal
If you've had a gastric band procedure, and it doesn't work as expected, or you've had complications, surgery may be needed to remove it.
Revisional Surgery
If you've regained weight after gastric bypass surgery, due to a stretched pouch or an enlarged stomach outlet, revision surgery may be an option. A team of physicians, physiologists and nutritionists can help you make changes in a healthy diet and lifestyle.
Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation
Corona Regional Medical Center has been designated a Bariatric Surgery Comprehensive Center by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). To become certified, the hospital was required to satisfy or exceed requirements in categories, including:
- Annual number of cases
- Complication rates
- Long-term follow-up and support
- Ongoing quality improvement
- Bariatric evidence based practice
- Continuing education for staff and patients
Patients seek bariatric surgery to reduce the number of obesity-related complications like heart disease, stroke, sleep apnea and diabetes. And then also to reduce their body weight, look better and feel healthier and more energetic.
Minimally invasive, laparoscopic or robotic bariatric surgery at Corona Regional Medical Center reduces the size of the stomach to limit the amount of food eaten. Also, this procedure requires a smaller incision, usually involving less pain and faster recovery.
Bariatric Surgery Blue Distinction® Centers
Corona Regional Medical Center has earned the Blue Distinction® Centers for Bariatric Surgery designation by BCBS.
Individual results may vary. There are risks associated with any surgical procedure. Talk with your doctor about these risks to find out if bariatric surgery, minimally invasive surgery or robotic surgery are right for you.
